Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth is the fifth book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

The book starts off with Greg Heffley being awakened by his mother on a Saturday morning. He then realizes that his father has already left for work and won’t be back until late that night. His mother tells him that she is going out with her friends and will be back later as well. She also tells him not to make any plans because she and his father will be going out to dinner later that night.

Greg doesn’t know what to do with his day, so he goes to see if his best friend, Rowley, is available. Rowley’s parents tell Greg that he can’t come over because they are having a garage sale. At the mall, he runs into Holly Hills, who is shopping with her mom. He asks her if she wants to go see a movie but she says no because she is going shopping with her mom.

A frustrated Greg decides to go see if there are any new video games at the game store. When he gets there, he meets Fregley, who is looking at the same game as him – Dance Dance Revolution: SuperNova 2. They end up playing the game together and Greg even buys Fregley a soda afterwards. When Greg gets home, he finds out that his mom and dad have already left for their dinner date and they left him a cold pizza for dinner. Before going to bed, he checks his email and finds out that Holly Hills has sent him an email asking if he wants to go see a movie tomorrow afternoon.
